The German International School is a private school in the west end of Toronto. The GIST is part of the network of over 140 German schools abroad and is therefore supported by the Federal Republic of Germany and regularly monitored for school quality development. Our school will be attended by approximately 80 students in the coming school year. The children of our school come to us from the Greater Toronto Area, Germany and all over the world and are taught from kindergarten to Grade 8. As a German school abroad, we work according to the Thuringian curriculum, which is supplemented by the Ontario curriculum. Lessons in the primary level are mainly taught in German. To strengthen our team, we are looking for a motivated, fully qualified native English teacher with excellent experience in the primary and junior school sector and outstanding competences in the coordination of the English department as well as in school quality development as soon as possible and by September 1, 2021, at the latest. As a full-time employee, you will assume responsibility and coordination for the English department at our school as well as the associated quality management for the entire department. You will act as Head of English Department and be responsible for the implementation of English lessons based on the Ontario Curriculum in grades 1 to 8. In addition, you will act as the Canadian Representative at our school. In this role, you will be responsible for the accreditation of our school under ONSIS. You will also be responsible for implementing a lively and reflective Canadian/international culture in the everyday school life of a German school abroad. You are familiar with the private school system in Toronto, have well-founded and established contacts and support our families in the transition to the Canadian school system after grade 8. You will be responsible for the creation and planning of our after-school programs and the implementation of seasonal camp offerings for our school. Extensive experience in safety management would be absolutely preferred. Within this position, you will act as a member of the Extended School Management Team and be part of the school's Steering Group Team, which is responsible for school quality development.
Duties & responsibilities:
For the school year 2021/22, the school will focus on the qualitative expansion of the English program in terms of strategic quality development.
As a German school abroad, we pursue the highest quality standards and would like to implement these for the English department with a corresponding investment.
All our students should receive a profound and high-quality education within the English classes in accordance with the Ontario Curriculum, so that they can move effortlessly and successfully into any local or international school system and navigate different educational and career paths in a first-class manner.
With the advertised position you will take on a responsible key position (40 hours) at our school.
The position is broken down into a full-time position teaching English to grades one through eight and approximately 8 management hours dedicated to leading the English Department as well as the other duties described.

Requirements for this position:
You enjoy outstanding tasks and describe yourself as dedicated, highly structured, flexible, proactive, and consistently solution- and goal-oriented person who actively seeks to develop, works independently and equally appreciates working as part of a team.
You are a fully qualified native English speaker and have solid experience in teaching English in a language-sensitive way in grades one to eight.
You will teach our cross-grade classes in an individualized, differentiated way based on the Ontario Curriculum and our ‘CHARAKTER concept’.
To develop and expand your teaching skills, you will regularly participate in in-service training, also within the network of North American schools abroad.
You will be primarily responsible for the management of the English Department and thus for the quality development of the English curriculum in all grades from 1 to 8.
In close coordination with the school management and the leadership of the Steering Group, you will implement the milestones agreed for the school year 2021/22 for the quality development of the English curriculum and regularly inform the school's Board of Trustees about the corresponding development.
In doing so, you use appropriate teaching materials in a targeted manner and inform parents transparently and regularly about the aspired contents and competences.
You will be responsible for the implementation of the EQAO tests as well as other local and international competence tests and English-language competitions, as well as the corresponding evaluation and, if necessary, adjustment of the corresponding teaching.
As the Canadian Representative of our school, you will create an awareness for the implementation of a lively Canadian-international culture at a German school abroad.
To this end, you will also implement daily international developments and news into your lessons and enrich school life with them.
You will be responsible for the implementation of traditional Canadian annual celebrations and traditions.
You demonstrate excellent knowledge of the Toronto private school market and have a strong network.
You will work closely and transparently with our families to guide the individual process, search, and enrolment in a Toronto post-secondary private school after grade eight.
You will take responsibility for our wide range of varied courses in the after-school program, organizing them both in face-to-face format and virtually when necessary.
You will organize our school camps (September camp as well as various holiday camps) in a timely manner and always put together a varied and attractive program.
As an active member of the Management Team (Extended School Board) and the Steering Group Team (School Quality Management), we expect you to be openly proactive and consistently innovative.
Your cooperation with the board, teacher and office team is also characterized by a high level of transparent communication and mutual appreciation.
You will actively support the school management in the area of local hiring processes as well as in the supervision of interns.
You have sound experience within digital communication portals and can use these for virtual teaching at short notice and in a professional manner.
You have knowledge of Microsoft 365 or are willing to undergo appropriate further training in this area.
